Lee Morgan once again became part of the Jazz Messengers after replacing Freddie Hubbard, who left after replacing Morgan originally. The band is rounded out by pianist Cedar Walton, a steaming Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and bassist Reggie Workman with Art Blakey on the skins, of course. Indestructible is a hard-blowing blues 'n' bop date with Shorter taking his own solos to the outside a bit, and with Blakey allowing some of Fuller's longer, suite-like modal compositional work into the mix as well ("The Egyptian".

Indestructible is a jazz album by drummer Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. It was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1966, and was Blakey's last recording for Blue Note. The bonus track featured on the CD reissue was originally issued on Pisces. This was the final recording for half of the band's members: Wayne Shorter would leave to join the Miles Davis Quintet and be replaced (briefly) by John Gilmore, bassist Reggie Workman would be replaced by Victor Sproles, and pianist Cedar Walton would leave to be replaced by John Hicks.

In 1947 Art Blakey formed a short-lived big band that he named the 17 Messengers. He also recorded with a smaller group called the Jazz Messengers. In 1954 Blakey was a member of a co-operative band with Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins and Horace Silver. This band recorded in 1955 as the Jazz Messengers with Silver as nominal leader. With minor personnel changes the group remained together until 1956. Subsequently, Blakey formed his own band, calling it the Jazz Messengers, a name he retained for all his bands until his death in 1990.
