MX-80's press packet enticed me. It spoke of a band that was helmed by a maniacal t-garde-jazz guitarist named Bruce Anderson, who had allegedly inspired Thurston Moore. The band's seemingly illustrious career even yielded an extensive collection with liner notes by reputed music writer/notorious record collector Byron Coley. One listen to the album included with the press packet made me never want to delve into their back catalog. The album, We're an American Band, is disastrous. It is not only pointless, but it might squelch the band's ability to find.
We're an American Band (song). Redirected from We're An American Band (song)). We're an American Band" (from the album of the same name) became Grand Funk Railroad's first No. 1 single released July 2, 1973. Written by Don Brewer and produced by Todd Rundgren, its huge chart success broadened Grand Funk's appeal. It was sung by drummer Don Brewer who began doing more lead vocals for the band and helped with their transition to making top 40 hits.
Grand Funk Railroad, We’re an American Band. Released just days before July 4 in 1973, Grand Funk Railroad’s first No. 1 single is the tune that opened the group’s opportunities to pop success. An album cut from Sammy Hagar’s 1982 record Three Lock Box, the tune was never released as a single but has stood out as one of the earliest and best '80s songs about American soldiers and the sacrifices they make to serve. In some ways, it’s a precursor to Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the . Damn Yankees, Don’t Tread on Me.
