Beaster is Sugar's 1993 EP. Its songs were recorded at the same time as the band's acclaimed first album, Copper Blue. However, it has a much denser, heavier sound, closer in spirit to Hüsker Dü than that record. Lyrically it's so unnerving for me to listen to i. said band leader Bob Mould. Musically it's harder, it's a little looser. Lyrically, it's a lot wilder than Copper Blu. opper Blue was such a great pop record that I just saw this as like the evil twin.

The second disc contains Beaster, the 1993 EP recorded at the same sessions as Copper Blue and, finally, the third disc contains a heavily bootlegged - and quite excellent - Live at the Cabaret Metro show from July 22, 1992.

Shortly after Copper Blue, Sugar issued a follow-up EP of material that didn’t quite fit onto the album, and when played back to back as they’re presented here, the differences are stark to say the least. Beaster is a much darker and harsher set of songs, carrying with them a much more aggressive approach and strange religious iconography. The careening punk rocker Tilted sounds more Hüsker Dü than Sugar, and Judas Cradle is a stomping permutation of shoegaze. And JC Auto, the strongest song here, is Mould at his most unhinged, snarling, I’m your Jesus Christ, I know, I know! The live.

Copper Blue, by all rights, deserves to be looked on as a masterclass in pop songwriting; featuring the catchiest hooks of Mould’s career, it’s a maturation of everything he’d been working towards in the ten years that preceded it. Those opening tracks – in fact, the whole of side one – are absolutely perfect, from the driving ‘The Act We Act’ to the swirling pseudo-psychedelics of ‘Hoover Dam’. Ultimately, they failed – though FU:EL works on its own merits as a solid mid-’90s alternarock album, it can’t help but be something of a disappointment after Copper Blue and Beaster.
