Some of Charlie Parker's finest live recordings were performed at the Royal Roost and broadcast on the radio during 1948-49. Vol. 3 contains the final three broadcasts with Bird's quintet of the period (trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Max Roach) being augmented by such special guests as vibraphonist Milt Jackson, tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson and bop singers Dave Lambert and Buddy Stewart.

This double LP, the second of three volumes, continues the documentation of Charlie Parker's Royal Roost broadcasts, performances that allowed his quintet (with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter, and usually drummer Max Roach) to stretch out on such songs as "Scrapple From the Apple," "Hot House," "Barbados," "Groovin' High," and "Oop Bop Sh'bam. The immortal altoist is heard at his peak throughout and is in consistently brilliant form, giving one a good idea as to what his live performances from the.

If I had my choice of one trip to take in a time machine, it would be to New York City on one of Bird's nights at the Royal Roost. 7 people found this helpful.
