JOE HARRIOTT DOUBLE QUINTET - INDO-JAZZSUITE - VERY RARE ORIGINAL UK 1 st PRESS MONO COLUMBIA LP - 1966 Very Rare Original 1 st Press Album by The Joe Harriott Double Quintet Under the . .Joe Harriott, already famous as one of the most adventurous jazz musicians in Europe, responded nobly to the challenge. Indeed, it is likely that his work here is some of the finest he has ever put on record. Three of the pieces in this suite – Contrasts, Megha and Gaud-Saranga – are based upon Indian ragas. The rage, explains John Mayer, is an Indian scale, which utilises varying ascending and descending patterns – certain notes on the way up and certain notes on the way down – but always in the set sequence.

Joe Harriott Double Quintet. Based almost entirely in the five-note raga - or tonic scale that Indian classical music emanates from - and Western modalism, the four ragas that make up the suite are a wonder of tonal invention and modal complexity, and a rapprochement to Western harmony. The band Harriott assembled here included his own group - pianist Pat Smythe, bassist Coleridge Goode, and drummer Allan Ganley - as well as trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, flutist Chris Taylor, Diwan Mothar on sitar, Chandrahas Paiganka on tamboura, and Keshan Sathe on tabla, with Mayer playing violin and Harriott on his alto.
This involved a "double quintet" of five Indian and five jazz musicians playing together on a number of compositions largely conceived by Mayer. Opinion is divided on the success of these experiments. At their best, they offered a new and unique fusion of styles, but at times one can also detect a restriction on the freedom of the jazzmen to improvise. In 1969, Harriott recorded the album Hum-Dono in collaboration with the Goan guitarist Amancio D'Silva. This was an unqualified success. Also featuring trumpeter Ian Carr and vocalist Norma Winstone, this album presented a more subtle and fluid mix of Harriott's signature alto sound with D'Silva's unique Indo-bebop guitar style.
