Peter Maxwell Davies conducting the Welsh soprano Mary Thomas in a rehearsal of his experimental piece Revelation and Fall in 1968 Photograph: Erich Auerbach/Getty Images. He was born into a modest household in Salford, Greater Manchester, to Hilda and Tom Davies. His father was a foreman in an optical instruments factory. Peter soon showed an aptitude for music, and devoured the contents of the Henry Watson music library, picking out complicated scores at the piano. He was also composing little pieces by the dozen. He had fruitful conducting relationships with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In 2004 he was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music, a role he embraced for a decade with gusto, and with none of the discomfort that, say, Andrew Motion displayed during his tenure as Poet Laureate.

This Linn release was recorded in the fall of 2015, before the death of Peter Maxwell Davies the following spring. It's not clear whether it was intended as a tribute to the still-active composer, who was suffering from a terminal illness, but it would serve perfectly well as one, at least for the less brash final phase of Maxwell Davies' career. The enthusiasm of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and its youthful conductor Ben Gernon in this music is hard to overstate; they make it clear that however fashions may change, the music of Peter Maxwell Davies will be around for a long time to come.

Unique in Scotland in singing daily services and having its own choir school, the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh enjoys an international reputation through its recordings, tours, broadcasts, and concerts. Described by Gramophone as ‘one of Scotland’s (indeed the UK’s) musical jewels’, the choir consists of choristers aged 9-13 (all attending St Mary’s Music School on Cathedral or government bursaries), university choral scholars and professional lay clerks. The choir’s latest recording is of music by sixteenth-century composer William Mundy, much of it recorded for the first time. The choir has worked with many ensembles and orchestras including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Opera North, and Dunedin Consort, and broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio Three, Radio Four, and Radio Scotland.
