Henry Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994) was an Academy Award-winning American composer, conductor and arranger. He is remembered particularly for being a composer of film and television scores - his best-known works are the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series and Moon River. Mancini won a record number of Grammy awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. Mancini was born Enrico Nicola Mancini in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the steel town of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
The Music from Peter Gunn is a 1959 album by Henry Mancini, RCA Victor LPM/LSP-1956, the soundtrack of the TV series Peter Gunn. It was the first album ever to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1959. It was followed by More Music from Peter Gunn, RCA Victor LPM/LSP-2040. The opening theme music is notable for its combination of jazz orchestration with a straightforward rock 'n roll beat.
So many Mancini tunes really swing-especially in the hands of arranger Quincy Jones! They do Days of Wine and Roses; Baby Elephant Walk; the Pink Panther Theme; Moon River; Peter Gunn; Mr. Lucky, and more. This is in a way a tribute album to Henry Mancini since he was responsible in part for allowing Quincy Jones to break the color ban of allowing African American composers to arrange in the studios. He and Earle Hagen raised cain to the studios to allow Quincy to score films and TV, the first being "The Pawnbroker" then of course later on "In The Heat Of The Night", "The Getaway" and many others.
