Timings of modern performances of the Symphony No. 39 average out to about 39 to 42 minutes, but Stokowski gets it in, with no discernable cuts, in 34:17. Both of these recordings were originally made for RCA Victor, and sonically the Symphony No. 1 is the more compromised of the two; RCA was still recording classical orchestral music in 1950 the same way they did in 1939; loud, a little distorted, very bright and somewhat brittle. In this performance, Stokowski was utilizing "his" orchestra, an ad hoc group put together mostly for recording purposes.
