Kathryn Elizabeth Smith (May 1, 1907 – June 17, 1986), known professionally as Kate Smith and The First Lady of Radio, was an American singer, a contralto, well known for her rendition of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America". She had a radio, television, and recording career spanning five decades, which reached its pinnacle in the 1940s. Smith became known as The Songbird of the South after her enduring popularity during World War II.
The Legendary Performer series - there were four on Elvis - collected hits, non-hits, and previously unreleased studio and live recordings with snippets of interviews. While their importance has been diminished by the various collections that have been released since, many of which robbed the "rare" tracks from here, the albums are essential as albums nonetheless. Each one was issued with a booklet that included rare photos, old posters, session notes and Elvis memorabilia with captions that were generally a bit fannish.
