Brö/Nilssen-Love Hairy Bones. Toshinori Kondo, Massimo Pupillo, Peter Brötzmann & Paal Nilssen-Love Snakelust (To Kenji Nakagami). Peter Brötzmann, Massimo Pupillo & Paal Nilssen-Love Roma 1. (play).
Legendary German free-jazz saxophonist - whose huge, screaming sound has been one of the most distinctive and celebrated in international improv since the late '60s - leads this equally monstrous improv super-group. Joined by s man Kondon and bassist Pupillo, it's the presence of the explosive PN-L on drums that will create the biggest fireworks here - over two fearsomely noisy nights. Vortex, 11 Gillett St, London, United Kingdom N16 8JH.
Trumpeter Toshinori Kondo was Brötzmann's front-line partner in the 1990s quartet Die Like a Dog; bassist Massimo Pupillo comes from the Italian jazz-noise-metal group Zu; and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, a Swede, seems to work with as many people as Brötzmann himself. This combination of players, none of whom is particularly known for subtlety, creates a highly combustible sound on the two long tracks that make up the show, and the disc. feat: Paal Nilssen-Love.
Unlike some free jazz, this recording has a driving, insistent quality. There are no ballads and there is no noodling. Brotzmann and the Kondo take many long solos and trade chops. They play off each other well. Some balk at electric trumpet, but it works in this format.
Brötzmann has released over fifty albums as a bandleader and has appeared on dozens more. His "Die Like A Dog Quartet" (with Toshinori Kondo, William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake) is loosely inspired by saxophonist Albert Ayler, a prime influence on Brötzmann's music. Since 1997 he has toured and recorded regularly with the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet (initially an octet) which he disbanded after an ensemble performance on November 11, 2012 in Strasbourg, France. Brötzmann has also recorded or performed with Cecil Taylor, Keiji Haino, Willem van Manen, Mats Gustafsson, Ken.
Hairy Bones is Peter Brötzmann (saxes, clarinets, tarogato), Toshinori Kondo (trumpet, electronics), Massimo Pupillo (e-bass), and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and whenever Brötzmann comes up with such a line-up there are always references to his legendary bands Last Exit and Die Like a Dog (the label makes them as well). And it points backs indeed: as in Die Like a Dog the rhythm group is a well-oiled machine, as in Last Exit there is a strong rock approach especially because Pupillo’s roots lie in the noise-jazz Italian group Zu and Nilssen-Love is the locomotive of Mats Gustafsson’s crossover.
