The first record release for Jimmy Powell on the Decca Records label was an energetic cover of Buster Brown's Sugar Baby which showcased Jimmy's considerable talent as a raunchy R&B performer. This was also highly significant as it can be considered the first "Brum Beat" single. While the record did not chart, it is likely Jimmy Powell's best known song and got his career off to a good start

singer from Birmingham, Jimmy Powell, then hired the group a few weeks later, and it became known as Jimmy Powell & the Five Dimensions, with Stewart being relegated to harmonica player. The group performed weekly at the famed Studio 51 club on Great Newport Street in London, where The Rolling Stones often headlined; this was Stewart's entrée into. the thriving London R & B scene, and his harmonica playing improved in part from watching Mick Jagger on stage. Stewart released Never a Dull Moment in the same year.

Jimmy Powell was one of the true veterans of the British blues scene, having cut his first single ("Sugar Babe" Pts. 1 and 2) for Decca in 1962, when Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies had barely established themselves. Powell formed the Dimensions in 1963 as his backing band, and within its ranks at the start was a young Rod Stewart on vocals and blues harp.

I mean just going by the cover, dude looks pretty crunchy so I was hoping he’d do some justice to the tune. Wow. Jimmy Powell was a Rhythm & Blues singer from the UK who released two albums in the early 70s. I can’t recommend this album in it’s entirety, but I do enjoy it solely for this blistering cover. Jimmy Powell and the Dimensions + The Village Green Soul Set Friday July 5th, 1968 Jimmy Powell led a Birmingham based soul and R&B band which once included Rod Stewart. They toured Germany and were known for hit songs titled Time Mends Broken Hearts and I Just Can’t Get Over You. The Village Green Soul Set was a popular band on the Birmingham college circuit.
