John Lee Hooker was an American blues singer and guitarist who recorded from 1948 to 2001. His discography includes recordings issued by various record companies in different formats. The Detroit Years (recordings 1948–1955). 1959 – House of the Blues (Chess). 1960 – The Blues (Crown) – early Modern tracks. 1961 – Sings the Blues (Crown) – Modern tracks. 1961 – Plays and Sings The Blues (Chess) – 1950–52 tracks.
Wandering Blues," the driving opener throughout which Hooker keeps time loudly with his foot, should give listeners a sense of what to expect from SINGS THE BLUES. These spare, raw recordings, originally made for the King label (the subtitle reads "16 selections-every one a pearl"!), are Hooker at his finest. Hooker's primitive gutbucket electric guitar is the main ingredient here, and it is his hard-edged boogie playing that fuels the fire. Though somewhat less of a growl than on later recordings, Hooker's voice is no less soulful or urgent.
Great album by John Lee Hooker. Unfortunately, this is a terrible pressing. There is a huge gouge in the grooves. This is a great blues album from John Lee Hooker. A great example of one chord blues structure intermixed with Hookers unique vocal style. Leading off with Black Snake, one of Hookers best, the sound quality of the recording makes this album a gem. It was recorded in 1959 and on good stereo it will put JLH right in the room in front of you! If you like Blues done acoustic then this is a must have album. 8 people found this helpful.
