Dealing in pedals, ploys and big, galactic drama, Mogwai consistently capture the experience of loping up every last hill in Scotland, then tumbling back down with a gorgeous, triumphant blast of sound. While Mogwai's output may be perpetually swelling, it's hardly facile: Young Team, the band's stunning 1997 debut, pulled together unexpected bits of found sound, carefully tinkered piano, and plenty of now-trademark crashing guitars, each lulling wave of sound eventually punctuated by an explosion of feedback or jarring soft-loud shift. Even in the blacklit genre of trip-hop, nothing hit the low register like the pulses of the brooding "Angel" or the choked-out, smoked-out vocals on "Risingson".

In the music video, Cher is stuck in an old TV and a knockoff iMac. Cool! 98. "Girls and Boys" by Blur. The song is equal parts Britpop and dance pop. And a great reminder of just how brilliant Blur was throughout the '90s. 97. "Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex. This is a song by a Swedish group called Rednex. If this isn't on any of your modern-day party playlists then who are you even? 31. "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here (Hex Hector Mix)" by Deborah Cox. youtube. Every time this song is played a baby gay gets its wings. 30. "Rhythm Is a Dancer" by Snap! Still not entirely sure what the title of this song means. Cher's biggest moment in the '90s. In the music video, she's in the middle of a club/rave (?) in a plastic box wearing a feather hat. Iconic! 14. "Everybody Everybody" by Black Box. Black Box is arguably one of the most underrated '90s dance troupes (if that's what you call them).

In the next decade, party-time rhythms and artistic atmospherics were adopted by the R&B and soul genres to create disco, and also by punk to then splinter off into post-punk and synth-pop and God knows what else. Those movements enjoyed moments in the spotlight into the 1980s, but spent a lot more time being fertilized and cultivated in the dark, rich soil of specific DJ scenes like Detroit, Manchester and Berlin, distributed by independent labels, and embraced by college and pirate radio. It’s the kind of album that’s inevitably tied to its era, but loaded with oddly timeless jams: What Time is Love?, Last Train to Trancentral and gospel-house hit Justified and Ancient. Everything But the Girl ended the ’90s synonymous with downtempo electronica, though they by no means started off that way.

These best album covers of the '90s paid homage to classic rock and jazz, pushed hip-hop music into high art, and looked to the future. The greatest album covers of the '90s. 40. Pet Shop Boys ‘Very’.
