Pickett’s third album chronicles that journey, playing like a battle between the Stax house band and the FAME crew. The edge may go to the Alabamans, mostly for Roger Hawkins’ relentless drums on Land of 1,000 Dances, but as a whole The Exciting Wilson Pickett helped distinguish Southern soul as grittier, rawer, and more immediate than its northern and Midwestern counterparts. In the spring of 1969, Lester Bowie moved his band, the Art Ensemble, to Paris. The Art Ensemble’s music remains difficult to grasp, but the spirit of it-the complex sonic arrangements, the all for one ethos-can be heard in modern-day jazz leaders like Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings.

Spirit of '76, released in May 1975, was the first of four albums that Spirit would (initially) release for Mercury Records. Though all four albums were greatly influenced by the time that Randy California spent living in Hawaii, this album bears that influence more than any of the others (aside from maybe Future Games). Though it was largely ignored upon its first release, many fans consider it to be one of Spirit's best albums.

Factory's triple-disc set The British Beat: Best of the '60s was released in conjunction with the 2007 PBS documentary of the same name and, like the show, this compilation is targeted at a general audience, so collectors shouldn't be surprised that there's hardly anything unfamiliar here. Indeed, the strength of this 57-track set is that it serves up many of the basics of the British Invasion.
