The River (Bruce Springsteen song). The River" is a song written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen, accompanied by the E Street Band, in 1979. The title track of his fifth album, it was a hit single in parts of Europe in 1981; it reached No. 25 in the Netherlands, and the top 10 in both Sweden and Norway. Its B-side was either "Independence Day" or "Ramrod", depending on the country of release.
The year before, Springsteen recorded it for an album called The Ties That Bind, which he decided not to release. This and six other tracks from that album were included on The River. A long, intense version was featured on the 1999 E Street Band reunion tour. More songs from Bruce Springsteen. More songs that were adapted from country songs. More songs with bodies of water in the title. The best part about that box set is the harmonica being played on The River. Ryan from Warren Ohio,This album changed my life. Just wanted to say that (not that anyone cares). But this song (along with the whole album) makes you think about who you are and what you've done and makes you look through yourself in the mirror. Thank you Bruce! Joe from Philadelphia, PaThe River is about his sister.

The River is one of Bruce Springsteens very best albums. The first half of the album is decidedly more upbeat then the second as Springsteen and band get things rolling with "The Ties That Bind", and the first thing you notice is the change in sound and tone from his Born To Run days. The production is bright, sunny, and almost pop in nature, Bruce's guitar ringing out cleanly rather then blending into the mix as we've heard previous as he leads his tight band through the paces for this ode to commitment and facing those "ties that bind" in life together, rather then alone.
Bruce Springsteen’s The River is a contemporary, New Jersey version of The Grapes of Wrath, with the Tom Joad/Henry Fonda figure – nowadays no longer able to draw upon the solidarity of family – driving a stolen car through a neon Dust Bowl in fear/That in this darkness I will disappear. Quite often, he does. Then you can sit back and stare at it and miss the whole point – not to mention the scope – of the album. Scope, context, sequencing and mood are everything here. Bruce Springsteen didn’t title his summational record The River for nothing, so getting hit with a quick sprinkle of lyrics is no solution when complete immersion is called for.
