All Things Must Pass (оригинал George Harrison). Всё преходяще (перевод Эрнест из Перми). Sunrise doesn't last all morning. It's not always going to be this grey. Но не всегда будет так пасмурно. All things must pass away. Sunset doesn't last all evening.

Tuesday, March 6, 2018. George Harrison: All Things Must Pass. George harrison: all things must pass (1970). Yet the grand production of the album - all the booming drums, the multi-tracked guitars, the armies of brass, the backing vocals seemingly coming from under the ground, etc. - would mean nothing without the songwriting. And the preachy tone of the album, with its constant lyrical references to The Divine Presence and constant moral guidance imperatives, would be insufferable if it did not have the musical backbone to give it proper substance.

Both brought me to tears. The first involves the recent clamor over the Concert for George albums and video. Most of the songs are ones that Harrison was not able to squeeze onto a Beatles album thanks to the stifling presence of the dual songwriting team of Lennon and McCartney. So what do you do when you can’t get a song on your own band’s album? You release three records’ worth. What’s more surprising than the quantity of songs is the quality.

But All Things Must Pass was nothing if not exuberant, even on its many mellow tracks. It is the sound of Harrison exhaling. He was quite possibly the only Beatle who was completely satisfied with the Beatles being gone. He had already tried to leave the band once, during the Let It Be sessions in early 1969, and his marginalization as a songwriter was openly acknowledged within and outside of the band. He had a stockpile of songs, wrote a bunch more, and had the clout, cash, and es to make it all happen.

Throughout All Things Must Pass, George acts as moral witness and proselytizer for a way of life. When he sings lines like You’ve been polluted so long, or not too many people can see we’re all the same, these lines, like those of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Piggies, carry an air of sanctimoniousness and moral superiority which is offensive. Here George stops preaching, and, speaking only to a God, delivers a simple, but majestic plea: Help me Lord please To rise a little higher Help me Lord please To burn out this desire. Beyond particular evaluations, this is an album of striking honesty and force, greater than the sum of its parts.
