Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album from English rock band Pink Floyd. The follow-up to their legendary album The Dark Side Of The Moon, its genesis was marked by the band’s disorientation following their rise to planetary exposure. Finding it difficult to figure out what to do with their creative future and physically worn out by extensive touring, the band members entered a state where they would reflect on the past, and most notably Pink Floyd founder-gone-mad Syd Barrett. Wish You Were Here has an overal melancholy feel, yet its melodic density, powerful guitar solos by David Gilmour and heavy use of Richard Wright’s keyboards provide a very colourful listening experience. Although they had approached it with quite a bit of a writer’s block, the band members have often voiced their satisfaction with the final result.

Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 12 September 1975 through Harvest Records and Columbia Records, their first release for the latter. Based on material Pink Floyd composed while performing in Europe, Wish You Were Here was recorded over numerous sessions throughout 1975, at Abbey Road Studios in London.

This is the situation Pink Floyd faced when it came to following up The Dark Side of the Moon. One option in this situation is to experiment with something so uncommercial that it will not bear comparison with what preceded it. Pink Floyd tried this with the Household Objects project. Disc one is the standard album remastered by James Guthrie and Joel Plante in 2011. The remastering sounds superb to these ears, and even when cracked up to quite high volume levels it was still listenable with no distortion and degradation of the sound. Wish You Were Here is much better in the modern . The initial rhythm guitar chugs away on the rear right channel and then the lead comes in on the front two channels which works really well. The Quad mixes it differently and it’s less effective.

On its release in 1975 Wish You Were here topped the album charts in both the UK and the US. Reflecting the bands thoughts of the time on the music business, and exploring themes of absence, Wish You Were Here contains the classic cut Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a tribute to founder member Syd Barrett.

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor.
