Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter and poet who was active in music from 1967 until his death in 2016. Cohen released 14 studio albums and eight live albums during the course of a recording career lasting almost 50 years, throughout which he remained an active poet.

Every album has been remastered from the original analogue master tapes. Cohen celebrates his 77th birthday on September 21, 2011. THE COMPLETE ALBUMS COLLECTION contains all 17 of Cohen’s albums, each in a mini-LP replica CD jacket of the original release. Along with these, a lavish 36-page booklet will include all discographical annotations and recording information, as well as a brilliant 1,300-word essay by Pico Iyer. From the 1960s to the ’00s, the transcendent beauty of Leonard Cohen unfolds over the course of THE COMPLETE ALBUMS COLLECTION. Individually, the 17 albums in the box set comprise: – SONGS OF LEONARD COHEN (released December 1967); – SONGS FROM A ROOM (April 1969); – SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE (March 1971); – LIVE SONGS (April 1973); – NEW SKIN FOR THE OLD CEREMONY (August 1974); – DEATH OF A LADIES’ MAN (November 1977)

The tracks on this two-CD, 31-song anthology, spanning Cohen's career from his 1967 debut album through 2002's Ten New Songs, were chosen by Cohen himself. It could thus be regarded as an accurate mirror of how Cohen sees his own career path and catalog highlights. And there are many of the songs you would expect from any decent Cohen retrospective: "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy," "So Long Marianne," "Bird on a Wire," "Famous Blue Raincoat," and "I'm You're Man," for instance.

Leonard Cohen, pictured in 1985, passed away at the age of 82. Rob Verhorst/Getty. Poetry, fiction and songwriting were more or less equal forms of expression to Leonard Cohen – although one paid a hell of a lot better than the others. The opening track of Leonard Cohen's debut album became his career-making signature. Comparing it to a great Bordeaux, he has deemed this immaculate conflation of the spiritual and the sensual to be his best work. Five years after Recent Songs, 50-year-old Leonard Cohen returned with Various Positions, which contained the most covered song of his career. Hallelujah" did not impress CBS president Walter Yetnikoff, however, who considered the album an abomination: "What is this? This isn't pop music. We're not releasing it.

I knew Suzanne from an old album by Neil Diamond, was wowed by Jeff Buckley's fabulous recording of Hallelujah (the best cover of them all) and finally intrigued by a chance hearing of First We Take Manhattan. I am thrilled to have found this collection. If it Be Your Will was moving

From his 1967 debut through this handpicked 2002 reckoning, no songwriter confounds the sacred and the profane more poetically than Leonard Cohen. His dark baritone and deceptively simple arrangements lend Biblical authority to early songs like "Suzanne" and "Sisters of Mercy. The life-affirming "Hallelujah" preceded "I'm Your Man" and "The Future," which depicted both life and love as a battlefield. Later songs like "A Thousand Kisses Deep" reflect Cohen's experience as a Zen monk. The Essential Leonard Cohen Leonard Cohen.
