Everything that drummer Pete La Roca did before making Basra was a prelude in his career, and all of his later accomplishments are anti-climatic in comparison with this album. In 1965 La Roca, a respected but somewhat obscure drummer gathered together an unbelievable quartet comprised of Joe Henderson, pianist Steve Kuhn and bassist Steve Swallow for the Basra album. This was the only time that this group ever played together yet they sound very much like a major band that had been performing this music for years. Henderson is in astounding form, inspiring the other musicians to create famous.
Pete La Roca (born Peter Sims; April 7, 1938 – November 20, 2012) was an American jazz drummer. Sims learned percussion in Public School, at the High School of Music and Art, and at the City College of New York, where he played tympani in the CCNY Orchestra

Pete La Roca led the date, but it could have been any of the "Quartet which doesn't seem like a Quartet". These gentlemen are painting with a huge tonal canvas with broad, bold strokes. Joe Henderson is on tenor sax, Steve Kuhn on piano, Steve Swallow on bass, and Pete on drums. I wasn't overly familiar with Pete La Roca when I picked up this CD due a number of recommendations. He was a fairly prolific sideman in the late 50s to mid 60s as a drummer backing such notables as Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Clark, and Joe Henderson. Though his appearance are actually numerous his name appears as a session leader on just two dates for Blue Note before he became an attourney in the late 60s.
