Matthew Barnes, known by his stage name Forest Swords, is an English music producer and artist. Forest Swords's debut 6 track EP Dagger Paths was originally released in March 2010 before being reissued later that year with additional tracks

Engravings is the debut album by English music producer Matthew Barnes under the stage name Forest Swords, released on 26 August 2013 through Tri Angle Records.

On Forest Swords’ 2010 EP Dagger Paths, the web of dub, psych, dance, and drone spun by UK producer Matthew Barnes felt instantly singular. Engravings is the perfect sequel, cementing his knack for creating complex effects with elementary methods. On Forest Swords’ 2010 EP Dagger Paths, the web of dub, psych, dance, and drone spun by UK producer Matthew Barnes felt instantly singular. Every song here is boldly sensual, and each note has a distinct emotional hue.

Album · 2013 · 10 Songs. Weaving an intricate, alluring web of trip-hop, psych, dub, and electronica, Engravings picks up quite nicely where Forest Swards’ Fjree Feather EP earlier in the year left off. Muted tom drums, echoing vocal wisps, muffled Mellotron, and what could be glistening charango (or perhaps oud) strings are but a few of the tools that paint Forest Sword’s rhythm-based dreamscapes, which this time around aren't quite as menacing.

Forest Swords – 'Engravings'. Everyone secretly wants to be a ninja. Just ask Forest Swords – electronica producer Matthew Barnes – whose downtempo debut album is perfect for soundtracking those moody, pre-fight stare-outs in scratchy ‘70s martial arts films. But there’s far more to Barnes’s music than just haunting Oriental melodies and B-movie imagery. Engravings’ is a complex, quietly beautiful record, borrowing from shadowy hip hop, glitchy R&B, dubstep, post-rock guitars and breakbeats.

Forest Swords’ fast-approaching debut album very nearly never came to be. After releasing 2010’s critically beloved Dagger Paths EP, . producer Matthew Barnes toyed with the idea of retiring his dub-and-R&B-mining moniker. I was all set on just leaving the whole project as an EP and then going to do other things, Barnes says.

Forest Swords’ debut long-player is electronic mastery at its very finest, because ‘Engravings’ manages to make electronic music feel tactile, organic, and alive. It’s an album that has facets from across the spectrum of experimental electronic music but, in the hands of the masterful sonic auteur Matthew Barnes, Forest Swords’ music sounds triumphantly singular.

This one plays 45?So there should be a mayor sound difference?

Keth
Amazing record

Aedem
Is the limited edition LP identical to the "normal" copy? (the only difference being the magazine?

JUST DO IT
Ok. Do you own the normal UK or US copy?

Sti
I own both a retail copy and the mail order one. Besides the booklet, the mailorder/limited edition version is a high gloss sleeve. They are identical other than that. Haven't seen anyone else report there's a difference but there definitely is.

Valawye
Wow, this one surprised me, last track is lush. 4/5

Cenneel
Can't seem to get the web address for the download to operate

Fordrelis
Maybe this isn't the best place for that comment. Contact the record label perhaps? :p
