Matt Berry may be best known for his series of hilarious characters on TV shows like The IT Crowd, Snuff Box, and Toast of London, but he's had a musical career cooking along at the same time.

Matt Berry announces the follow up to his critically acclaimed string of records with his latest album, 'The Small Hours'. Following on from Witchazel and Kill The Wolf through to 2014's Music for Insomniacs (which saw the musician, writer and celebrated actor explore the effects of sleeplessness through a range of modular equipment) 'The Small Hours' is perhaps Matt's most personal yet, exploring themes of death, religion, loneliness and the changing of the seasons
Still, despite this late-album salvaging, ‘The Small Hours’ marks the first Matt Berry album that might merit a little ‘stick to the day job’ heckling from its audience. With any luck this constitutes no more than a blip, a small blemish on the well-groomed polymath’s sterling and varied career that will be overshadowed by his future endeavours. As it stands, though, this is a record that should only be bought if you feel like another pair of socks might just drive your dad to do something drastic this Christmas.
Berry followed up the album in 2013 with the release of the richly autumnal Kill the Wolf, which featured guest spots from Morriss, Eric Johnson of the Shins, and James Robert Shaw of Everything Everything. The next year he took his band, now called the Maypoles, on the road, documenting it with a live album, Matt Berry & the Maypoles Live, that November. When it came time to record his next album, 2016's The Small Hours, Berry headed to Rimshot Studio in Kent, where they used a hand-built 60-year-old mixing desk. He also used his home studio and for the first time recorded his band laying down the basic tracks live.
