John Coltrane was a brilliant jazz musician, and there really is no phase of his career that doesn't feature stunning sax work, but he was just learning how to run and lead a band (while trying to kick a heroin habit) when he recorded for Prestige Records in the mid- to late '50s

This article presents the discography of the jazz saxophonist and band leader John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967). Coltrane participated in his first recording sessions while enlisted in the Navy from August 6, 1945, to August 11, 1946. He performed eight numbers in a pickup band that included trumpeter Dexter Culbertson. These were private recordings not made for official release.
An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone
The album is fairly stock-standard hard-bop of the time, and the rhythm section of Chambers and Philly Joe were very familiar to Coltrane. Donald Byrd's classic style doesn't feature as much as it could, but when it does it's beautiful, particularly on ballad "Polka Dots and Moonbeams". Hank and Trane don't sound all that different to each other in this period. In this period, Coltrane's explorations sound best when he's grounded by a strong chord progression that's inherently melodic, and "Solacium" is the perfect example of that. John Coltrane – tenor saxophone Cecil Payne - baritone saxophone Pepper Adams - baritone saxophone Mal Waldron – piano Doug Watkins – bass Art Taylor – drums. Cecil and Pepper dominate this record.
