Nietzsche's music is described as an expression of his creative longing and of his artistic activity. This Bamberg evening had also revealed something of the complicated process by which Nietzsche freed the musician in himself and which was accompanied by his scepticism. Nietzsche on the Music of Bizet and Wagner. Der Fall Wagner" (The Case of Wagner) - Turin Letter of May, 1888.
In a letter of October 1887, he wrote: there has never been a philosopher who has been in his essence (im Grunde) a musician to such an extent as I am.

Friedrich Nietzsche argued that the ‘will to power’ is the force that drives us as humans. He also said that ‘without music, life would be a mistake’. Despite finding most of his influence in philosophy and philology, Nietzsche also composed several works for voice, piano and violin. Surprised? Fear not: Nietzsche’s compositions might come as a revelation to even the most clued-up classical music geeks. He was also introduced to the music and writing of Richard Wagner, who introduced the philosopher to the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt after they met in 1868. Surrounded by great 19th century composers, it was easy to see how Nietzsche’s love for music could be nurtured. Despite his love for music, the polymath’s compositions were heavily criticised – even by his friend Wagner. The story goes that in 1871, Nietzsche sent a birthday gift of a piano composition to Wagner’s wife, Cosima.
Music played a thoroughgoing role in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, and he composed some himself. He was largely self-taught, using a textbook by Albrechtsberger from Beethoven's time, and the 50 works of his that survive are mostly short piano pieces and songs. The music is light, often quasi-improvisatory, and some of it (hear the tiny Sonatina, Op. II) resembles the keyboard music of the composer whom Nietzsche extolled later in life, Georges Bizet. The most substantial piece, the 20-minute Hymnus an die Freundschaft (track 11), was essentially his last composition, but he later reworked it with texts by his then-love interest, Lou Andreas-Salomé; that version was later arranged for chorus and orchestra by another composer.
