Mobley, an underrated player with a distinctive sound (influenced at times by Sonny Rollins), would continue to grow as an improviser and composer throughout the 1960s, but even on his earliest date here, he is a strong (if unsung) soloist. A must for Hank Mobley and 1950s Blue Note fans, but this deluxe box (released in 1998) promises to go out of print quickly.

Workout is an album by jazz tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley released on the Blue Note label in 1962. It features performances by Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Grant Green and Philly Joe Jones. In October 2014, it was released in Japan on SHM-CD, featuring a previously unissued take of "Three Coins in the Fountain". All compositions by Hank Mobley except as indicated.

For the first time since his Blue Note debut, Mobley opts for the conventional trumpet-tenor front line for the March 1957 session that follows. Art Farmer is added to the by now familiar rhythm section of Silver, Watkins, and Blakey.

The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions. The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions is six-CD or 10-LP box set released by Mosaic Records in 1998 compiled of previously issued albums, some of which were previously only issued in Japan. As one of the founding members of the original cooperative Jazz Messengers, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was part of Bebop's second generation of players. But there was a new inspirational sound taking hold, with roots in gospel and blues

Hank Mobley became a key player in the Blue Note orbit at a point when his particular skills and the emerging format for studio jazz recording were in a most complimentary zone. The sidemen reads like a "Who's Who of Hard Bop". The musicians who participated in one or more of Hank's nine '50s sessions include Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, Art Farmer, Sonny Clark, Horace Silver, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones and Art Blakey.

Hank Mobley was everywhere, the main studio sax man for Blue Note backing up everybody and a force unto himself. While a bebop player, he had a beautiful lyric tone missing from his peers, who often sound like they are blowing as hard as they can and moving their fingers as fast as they can. Rather than playing "sheets of sound", his solos are logical and well thought-out even tho he's soloing, ad-libing what he plays. This MOSAIC recording is a vast improvement. Sadly, later in life, from the mid sixties onward, Blue Note and others forced Mobley into trying to be a Coltrane Clone with a harder, harsher, noisier sound. He struggled, in and out of prison, and ultimately died in poverty and is relatively unknown and certainly under-appreciated today.
