McAlmont and Butler are an English rock/soul music duo, comprising singer David McAlmont and guitarist Bernard Butler. After Butler's acrimonious split from Suede, he teamed up with ex-Thieves singer McAlmont. They had a bonafide hit in their debut single Yes in 1995, a grandiose pop song. Following the release of the compilation The Sound of McAlmont & Butler, they split acriminously the following year in 1996.
McAlmont and Butler did not tour and made few public performances; including festivals such as T in the Park in 1995. They also performed "Yes" on the BBC TV show Later with Jools Holland. Another single, "You Do", was released later that year, and peaked at number 17. Shortly after McAlmont and Butler went their separate ways. The producer David Arnold then worked with McAlmont on a version of "Diamonds Are Forever". They went on to work together in 1998 on McAlmont's second album A Little Communication. In 2001 Butler wrote some songs and reunited with McAlmont, and they were signed by EMI and created the album Bring It Back (2002) which spawned two single releases, "Falling" and "Bring it Back"
Formed in 1994, David McAlmont and Bernard Butler had already experienced success, Butler as the guitarist in Suede, until his departure during the recording of their second album, Dog Man Star. McAlmont, a singer with a three octave range, had been part of the duo Thieves with Saul Freeman, subsequently releasing an album of their sessions under the name McAlmont in 1994. Several additional songs were written and recorded with the idea for a third album. The song "Speed", taken from those third album sessions, was released on Rough Trade Records on 7 August 2006 as a download and 7" single. An unfinished third album remains written, partially recorded and awaiting completion. In 2014 Bernard Butler organised two special shows as McAlmont & Butler in aid of the Bobath Centre, assisting children with cerebral palsy.
