Listen: The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Red House. The album builds on the music Coltrane made as a sideman for Miles Davis, but where Miles deliberately restrained himself and his band on the epochal Kind of Blue, Coltrane tests his limits. Not everything Coltrane discovers is frenetic-he’d never before written a ballad as lovely and gentle as Naima, not coincidentally recorded with a different combo than the rest of the record. Nina Simone was a Juilliard-trained classical pianist and a preternaturally adroit interpreter of jazz, folk, and pop, but in 1965, she was singing the blues. In January, Simone’s friend Lorraine Hansberry, who wrote A Raisin in the Sun, died from cancer; in February, on Simone’s 32nd birthday, her friend Malcolm X was assassinated.

In this way, the masters from Bach and Vivaldi to Rachmaninov and Mahler are generously represented, so even though the album gives merely a sample of what each composer's music is like, the quantity of tracks makes it a broad introductory survey. Track Listing - Disc 1. Sample.

Alastair Greene: Dream Train. Dream Train never sounds bad during its 13-track setlist. In fact, when Dream Train sounds good, it highlights exactly what we all like about blues, rock, and the intertwining therein. Dream Train is a nostalgic and satisfying foray into the classic southern blues style with enough catchy tunes, slick riffs, and head-bobbing rhythms. The Truth might just be the catchiest blues rock album of the year. The biggest problem with The Truth is every time a track ends you want to play it again, but then the next song begins and you can’t stop listening to that one. The Truth is about the songs and they don’t get much better.
