Meat Is Murder is the second studio album by English rock band the Smiths, released on 11 February 1985 by Rough Trade Records. The album became the band's only number one on the UK charts, and stayed on the charts for thirteen weeks. It also reached number 40 in Canada and number 110 in the United States.

The album I have chosen is 1985's Meat Is Murder. The Smiths' eponymous debut is their most astonishing record, The Queen Is Dead their best, but Meat Is Murder is my favourite: freewheeling, exciting, political, with Morrissey's words and Marr's music interlacing perfectly. It starts as if in the middle of something – you're already part of this. Meat Is Murder is local and British from the first line – "Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools" – and expresses fury at a kind of school life that has been forgotten.

With their second proper album Meat Is Murder, the Smiths begin to branch out and diversify, while refining the jangling guitar pop of their debut. In other words, it catches the group at a crossroads, unsure quite how to proceed. While the production is more detailed than before, the Smiths are at their best when they stick to their strengths - "The Headmaster Ritual" and "I Want the One I Can't Have" are fine elaborations of the formula they laid out on the debut, while "Rusholme Ruffians" is an infectious stab at rockabilly.

Meat Is Murder is the second studio album by the British alternative rock band The Smiths. It was released in February 1985 and became the band's sole number one album in the UK charts during the band's lifetime, staying on the chart for 13 weeks. It reached number 110 in the US. In 2003, the album was ranked number 295 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The Smiths had released their debut album The Smiths one year before, and had also released a collection of B-sides, BBC recordings, alternate tracks and such as Hatful of Hollow. The Smiths were gaining fame in England at the time of this album's release. The album did sell fairly well though, and expectations were high for their second album. Some say they disappointed: Meat is Murder is commonly regarded as the Smiths' worst studio effort. While it is far from being a terrible record (it is actually quite impressive), it pales in comparison to the incredible potential displayed on their first album, which they finally lived up to with their third effort, The Queen is Dead. But despite not being their best album, Meat is Murder has some incredible strong points.

That fact seems all the more bizarre when I consider that, of the nine songs on the record, the title track is by far my least favourite. By placing it at the end of side two, it's also been the easiest one to skip, and as a result is probably the track on the album I've listened to the least. This may be because of a sense of guilt it helped inculcate right at the start, and if that's the case then that's testament to its power, and forms at least some sort of explanation of its impact.
