The Rip Chords were an American singing duo originally called The Opposites, composed of Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas. This original twosome (Phil and Ernie) eventually expanded into four primary voices, adding Columbia producer, Terry Melcher and co-producer, Bruce Johnston. The group came to be associated with the hot rod/surf genre of the day, although their first single release, "Here I Stand," did not reflect that style. They recorded at Columbia Records in Hollywood from 1962-1965.

Hey Little Cobra & Other Hot Rod Hits, Three Window Coupe. The Rip Chords were originally Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas, but by the time this album was recorded, producers Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher had pushed them aside and sang most of the Rip Chords songs themselves. Phil Stewart was allowed to sing lead on two songs on this album. Regardless of all that, this is a fun album that features the early-'60s California sound.
Although the Rip Chords are remembered as something of a one-hit wonder for their early 1964 Top Five hot rod smash "Hey Little Cobra," they did actually record a fair amount of material in the mid-'60s, with four other singles reaching various lower regions of the charts. This well-done, 20-track compilation has all five of those hits, as well as assorted obscurities from their 45s and LPs, topped off by three previously unissued cuts.
