Understand (Japanese Bonus Track) Almost three years in the making, Pig Destroyer's new album Phantom Limb furthers the enigmatic band's nihilistic, shock and awe attack. PD boil metal down to its muscle, sinew, and bone - razor-sharp guitar, percussive pummeling, and a lone, stark howl - and use them to commit a vicious assault. The lyrics paint loathsome, frightening images of pitch-black self-hatred and the frailty of the human experience.
Band Name Pig Destroyer. Album Name Phantom Limb. Released date 12 June 2007. Labels Relapse Records PIAS (Play It Again Sam). This is the fourth album by influential grindcore band, Pig Destroyer. When I first heard about this album, I was sceptical. For one, the album had only 14 songs, as opposed to their usual twenty-ish. The songs were also longer in comparison to their previous albums. Then I listened to the album front to back and realized this is another one of PxDx's masterpieces. Pig Destroyer definitely perfected their sound with this album. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of Prowler in the Yard and Terrifyer and I still think PITY is their best album

With slightly longer songs (most are over a minute) than previous records, Pig Destroyer's fourth album is closer to death metal than the grindcore (or "deathgrind") they are often associated with. The tempos still reach breakneck speeds, it's just that Phantom Limb finds the band simplifying their approach just enough to inspire the distinction
Pig Destroyer is grindcore, through and through, and on its new album, Phantom Limb, some of the songs are slightly longer ("Loathsome" tops out at 4:04!) but many are well within the minute-and-a-half range. Hayes still delivers his serial killer-chic lyrics ("Stench of solvent covers stench of rot/ I didn't even recognize her like a painting/ A masterpiece torn to pieces"; "Your rib cage is open like a great white's jaws/ Your legs look so sexy out of context") in an unintelligible, rasping shout that practically sprays. All of this carries over on record to Phantom Limb. But what really sets the album apart is riffs. It's still not "catchy," but the chewy bits of Southern-flavored rock'n'roll guitar that Pig Destroyer leaves like bloody gristle on otherwise bleached bones offers something for every rock fan to gnaw on.

A former Pig Destroyer enthusiast, I bought Phantom Limb the very hour it appeared on store shelves, for I had awaited its release two months in advance. Oh, was I disappointed alright. This is my first Pig Destroyer album (sadly).
