Central State University Jazz Ensembles. Big Band Jazz '79 ‎(LP).

The Ball State University Bands enjoy a long and distinguished reputation for outstanding performances on campus, as well as at state and national conventions and athletic events. The mission of the Ball State band program is to foster a commitment to excellence that enables students to reach their highest level of musical performance and artistry whether in the concert hall or on the athletic field. The program offers a balanced curriculum that prepares music majors for professional careers and provides non-music majors an outlet for musical growth, expression and creativity

Usually recordings by college stage bands are to be avoided by all but close relatives since the illusion of professionalism heard in the well-rehearsed ensembles is constantly punctured by amateurish solos. However this CD features flugelhornist Clark Terry and Frank Wess (doubling on flute and tenor) on half of the selections and the orchestra (under the direction of Bob Lark) is fairly strong. The big band interprets a dozen songs from the Count Basie repertoire (plus "Winter Wonderland") with solid swing and good musicianship

The award-winning jazz ensembles at the University of Northern Colorado offer students performance opportunities in big bands, combos, vocal jazz groups, and Latin jazz. With over 30 years of history, UNC’s jazz ensembles have earned numerous accolades, including: More than 100 Downbeat Student Music Awards. GRAMMY nomination for the album Hot IV by Vocal Jazz I. Numerous performances at national and international conferences including IAJE, Midwest Band, Jazz Education Network, and others. Vocal Jazz performs with Jazz Lab Band I at the 2017 UNC Arts Gala.

A big band is a type of musical ensemble that usually consists of ten or more musicians with four sections: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. Big bands originated during the early 1910s and dominated jazz in the early 1940s when swing was most popular. The term "big band" is also used to describe a genre of music. One problem with this usage is that it overlooks the variety of music played by these bands.
