The Meadowlands is the third studio album by American indie rock band the Wrens, released by Absolutely Kosher Records on September 9, 2003, and in the UK and Europe two years later on September 19, 2005 by LO-MAX Records. Recording of the album originally began in January 1999, but writer's block and a loss of faith in the tracks they were recording meant the band took four years to complete the album, with many songs being rewritten or scrapped as recording proceeded.
What the album cover and song titles do not convey however, is how perfectly the themes of Meadowlands are pulled off, whether this is demonstrated through Bissell’s agonized lyricism or the reverb-laden guitars. The Wrens’ third release takes us to a place far-removed from the carefree demeanor of youth and even the not-so significant adolescent years; a period at which life becomes a bitter pill to swallow and little can be done to rectify the situation.

The Wrens' "The Meadowlands" comes very close to being a classic, as chances are that you'll love it. The only problem here is that singer Charles Bissell is not that likable (I can see a lot of people not liking him too much). He does a good enough job, but if he were more likable then the album would benefit much better as a whole. The lyrics tend to be pretty forgettable and hard to hear, though at times they can be interesting. Musically the production is great and the band sounds like a lo-fi-ish indie rock band with a little alternative and punk thrown in.
The Wrens' latest, The Meadowlands (released by the Berkeley-based indie Absolutely Kosher), has endured a considerably longer gestation period than Seacaucus - almost seven years. Some undoubtedly feared the band would pull a My Bloody Valentine, promising an album that never materialized. That it has appeared at all certainly comes as surprise, but the real shock is how good it is. The Meadowlands is as much as a departure from Seacaucus as that album was from Silver.
It's possible that The Meadowlands might be a "better" album if it were more focused and logical, but there's something to be said for its immersive, ess approach. Note to major labels: you missed a gem.
