Tallis scholars continue to entertain and educate! A group of selections from the pre-history of the Russian Orthodox Church Music precedes a leap to the 20th century, ending with a 'look-back' salute to Bortniansky, the giant of the 19th century. Two themes are present here: western influence in Russian Church music, and Masterpiece. These are familiar sounds from early western music beginning with the Ars Nova, and the very fine notes outline the likely influence and genre which provide a rare and fascinating perspective on this tradition. There are many reasons why one should purchase this album: one being that these early Gimell recordings(this one 1982) are superb in every way, great care having been taken for the acoustic of the recording. AND the Tallis Scholars had, in my opinion, the best possible group of singers through the '80's.

Anyone familiar with Renaissance music knows that this group has attained superstardom among its ilk The Boston Globe. Pärt has made an indelible mark on contemporary choral singing. The Tallis Scholars’ deep experience with both Renaissance and Russian Orthodox music inform their reverential – and flawless – renderings of one brilliant gem after another.
