The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, founded in 1951 by trumpeter Philip Jones, was one of the first modern classical brass ensembles to be formed. The group played either as a quintet or as a ten-piece, for larger halls. It toured and recorded extensively, and numerous arrangements were commissioned, many of which were bequeathed on Jones' death to the library of the Royal Northern College of Music.
This is my transcription of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble's "War - Hunger Games Version". It is in the original instrumentation, which is 4 trumpets, two trombones, a euphonium, and a sousaphone (I didn't write out a trap set part, although that's there too). Enjoy! The National Brass Ensemble is comprised of twenty-six of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the US. Gabrieli, featuring the NBE, includes 15 pieces from the Italian composer’s highly influential Sacrae Symphoniae. The inspiration for this recording comes from a historic, Grammy Award-winning recording, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli, featuring the legendary brass ensembles of the Chicago Symphony and the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. It has been long admired as the definitive modern performance of Giovanni Gabrieli’s works. Label: Oberlin Music. Gabrieli: Music for Brass Ensemble (Arr. T. Higgins). National Brass Ensemble.
The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble ( PJBE) was formed by Philip Jones in 1951, and soon consisted of two basic formations: a quintet (two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba) and a ten-piece group for the larger concert halls in Germany, the USA and Japan. The ensemble, which disbanded in 1986, gained world renown. It made numerous recordings and gave many first performances of new or long-unheard works, and was widely emulated. Its success was partly supported by the revival of Renaissance and Baroque music during the period, coupled with Jones' championing of contemporary music. The Just Brass series, established during the 1970's and published by Chester Music, was a unique and important development in the dissemination of brass chamber music.
