Clifford Brown & Max Roach is a 1954 album by influential jazz musicians Clifford Brown and Max Roach as part of the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, described by The New York Times as "perhaps the definitive bop group until Mr. Brown's fatal automobile accident in 1956". The album was critically well received and includes several notable tracks, including two that have since become jazz standards. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
The odd billing for this two-fer reissue, to the Clifford Brown/Sonny Rollins/Max Roach Quintet (a name that never graced a marquee), may help explain the album title, Complete Studio Recordings. Rollins was the last occupant of the saxophone chair in the Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet, joining in late 1955 and remaining until Brown and pianist Richie Powell were killed in a car accident in June 1956

Complete Studio Recordings. Import, Remastered at the very end of 1955 Sonny Rollins replaced Harold Land in the outstanding Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. Rollins' style proved a perfect fit for the group's extraordinary equilibrium between fast (and we mean really fast!) tunes and delicate, romantic, ballads, all combined with careful arrangements (mostly written by pianist Richie Powell). Together these represent some of Brown's last recorded work (the Plus Four album was his last studio album), and these two albums have a cohesive feel since they were recorded so close together by the same personnel. I am on the fence regarding proclaiming these to be essential albums, but they are historic in their own right.
