The Obsessed is a heavy metal band from Maryland led by Scott "Wino" Weinrich which combines elements of doom metal, stoner rock and punk rock. Formed in 1980, they recorded a few demos and played a handful of live shows until they first split up in 1986 when Weinrich joined as lead vocalist for Saint Vitus, but reformed four years later. After releasing three albums (including the one that was originally recorded in 1985), the Obsessed broke up for a second time in 1995

Sacred isn’t an immediate album and took several spins to fully open up for me, but when it did, it really did, and the simple arrangements took on unexpected depth and feeling. At 43 minutes it’s the perfect length and the production puts the appropriate amount of emphasis on the guitar, while the mix conveys a rugged gravitas. In a time without Lemmy’s bigger than life personality, Wino’s underground earnestness is all the more precious and Sacred does right by the legacy of The Obsessed. I’m very thankful Wino resurrected his original project and that he’s still out there creating music this interesting and meaty. Face it, everyone needs more Wino in their lives.

The release of The Obsessed’s fourth full-length album is rather odd when placed in the overall context of Wino’s long running career. It is the first record under that banner since 1994’s The Church Within, and while the legendary six-stringer has still put out acoustic material under his own name, this is the first heavy rock album he’s been involved with since Saint Vitus’s Lillie: F-65 in 2012.

Love you child like there’s no tomorrow Lust so deep this wolf must follow In the full moon light I see A pagan prayer with crystal wings Grab you mama by your fragile wings I’ll put you in my pocket full of dangerous things To my castle on the mountain’s peak Clouds they swirl, winds they shriek Side by side
