The song is the second single from Glass Animals' sophomore album How to Be a Human Being, and uses a melody similar to that of frontman Dave Bayley’s remix of Banks' Drowning, leading many fans to speculate that Youth was partly based on that song. What have the artists said about the song? Lead singer Dave Bayley told NPR that the song was inspired by a devastating story had heard from a stranger about her son. It was one of the saddest things I’d ever heard, and she was on the verge of cryin. but she also had a sense of optimism and calm

Glass Animals debut album, ZABA, was an album where you felt immersed in nature well people. It tells the stories of fictional characters created by the frontman, inspired by stories the band has heard from everyday people. With that in mind, How to Be a Human Being is a crushing disappointment for me, and I'll explain why as best I can. Zaba, and all the music released before it (and after for a bit, GA's Joey Badass collaboration was fantastic), was special because it really was unique. The "samey" problem seems to be recurring when people talk about Zaba, but I believe there's a difference between all the songs being the same and having a distinct sound. All the songs sound similar because that was just the style of Glass Animals, period.

For Glass Animals’ second album, the Oxford band opted not to write about themselves, but a range of characters they encountered while touring the world with their debut, Zaba. The result is fittingly kaleidoscopic, taking in twisted samples and African drumming ( Life Itself ), video game bloops ( Season 2 Episode 3 ), an. arpenters samples ( Mama’s Gun ). Their glittering tapestry of influences always blossoms into a captivating pop song-take The Other Side of Paradise with its dramatic, spiralling synths. How to Be a Human Being Glass Animals.
