The East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry was a feud between artists and fans of the East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop scenes in the United States, especially from 1994 to 1997. Focal points of the feud were East Coast–based rapper The Notorious . and his New York–based label, Bad Boy Records), and West Coast–based rapper Tupac Shakur (and Dr. Dre’s Los Angeles–based label, Death Row Records, which he was part of), who were both murdered in drive-by shootings. 2Pac - All Eyez On Me (1996). I don’t consider Pac’s music to be inherently West Coast music, except this double album. I’d include his Me Against The World album also, but I don’t consider Makaveli or his previous albums to be in that vein. It is probably hard to understand and I might look crazy, but this is my list.

The Best of 2Pac - Pt. 2: Life. The Best of 2Pac - Pt. 1: Thug. Until The End Of Time. The Rose That Grew From Concrete.

2Pac released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, which featured intense storytelling on singles such as Trapped and Brenda’s Got a Baby. His sophomore album Strictly 4 My . Z featured one of his signature songs, the Digital I Get Around. During his time with Death Row, 2Pac was seen as a catalyst for the East Coast-West Coast feud of the mid-1990s as he went at Bad Boy Entertainment’s two main figures, Puff Daddy and The Notorious . who he thought were involved in his 1994 shooting at Quad Recording Studios in New York City.

Naughty by Nature's Treach spoke to VladTV about the role the media played in the mid-90s east coast/west coast beef. Treach attributes a significant part of the rising tensions between the coasts to the Vibe Magazine cover that featured Biggie and Puff. when I saw that cover I said man what the f k is going on?"
