Philippe Entremont was Columbia's answer to RCA's Van Cliburn. Young and non-threatening. His reputation has not held up as well as Cliburn's, but I still find a lot of enjoyment in these performances. During my junior year in high school, I was bowled over by the LP of Saint-Saens Fourth Piano Concerto with Ormandy and the impossibly gorgeous Philadelphia Orchestra. Still am. (The Toulouse Orchestra, in the remake, doesn't do it for m. The Saint-Saens Piano Concertos don't get much respect either nowadays, though I have always enjoyed them.
