Funky Broadway" is a song written by Arlester "Dyke" Christian. It was originally recorded by his band, Dyke & the Blazers, in 1967, and was made into a hit by Wilson Pickett that same year. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and number eight on its Hot 100 chart. The song is notable as being the first charted single with the word "Funky" in the title as well as being prototypical funk music itself. Wilson Pickett - vocals. Spooner Oldham - piano, organ.

The late Dyke (Arlester Christian) was from Buffalo yet, after once backing the O'Jays in Phoenix, the band either became stranded or decided to stay there. It was the luckiest break they ever had, since they met someone who knew someone, which resulted in the recording and release of "Funky Broadway," a rough, funky, bass heavy dance tune written by Christian that rocketed up the charts. Funky Broadway" scored again when Wilson Pickett recorded it; his version had better musicians, but Dyke's rawer, amateurish original, had more gut appeal

Dyke And The Blazers were one of the great uptempo and dance/funk R&B bands; they weren't much for harmonizing or doing slow, romantic ballads, but on such songs as "Funky Broadway" or "We Got More Soul" they could strut and wail right alongside Archie Bell And The Drells. This was first-rate, driving soul and R&B. 1 Funky Broadway, Pt. 1 Dyke & the Blazers 2:38. 2 Funky Broadway, Pt. 2 Dyke & the Blazers 2:53. 3 Uhh, Pt. 1 Dyke & the Blazers 2:3. 4 Uhh, Pt. 2 Dyke & the Blazers 2:13
