Sure, there have been other virtuoso recordings of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major. But for sheer bravura excitement, no other recording can touch the RCA recording of Sviatoslav Richter with Charles Münch and the Boston Symphony from early November 1960. Richter's tone is bright, luminous, and sonorous and his technique is brilliant, poised, and powerful. And Richter's interpretation is so exuberant in the opening Allegro con brio, so deep in the central Largo, and so delightfully goofy in the closing Rondo that even the greatest recordings pale in comparison.

by Sviatoslav Richter;Charles Munch. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 15: II. Largo by Sviatoslav Richter;Charles Munch. In 1960 Richtr was first exposed to the United States and immediately hated it. The only concerto recordings he made here were two: this Beethoven First from Boston and a much greater Brahms Second with the Chicago Sym. The latter bids fair to be the greatest reading by any pianist, but the Beethoven is another kettle of fish. To begin with, Munch's conception is rackety and hectoring, a travesty even in an age when early Beethoven was played large.

Munch met and heard Richter in 1958 when the Boston Symphony Orchestra toured Russia. He was so impressed that he invited him to appear with the BSO. Richter’s Boston debut two years later, is presented here from the original stereo tapes for the first time. The result took your breath away Boston Globe. Richter and his accompanists are elegant and airy as well as noble, with the pianist offering a curtailed version of the longest cadenza option.
