It featured Wolfgang Windgassen, the Tristan, then well past his prime, I assumed, and Boehm who was getting on a bit, both too old for this opera which requires so much physical effort. My reservations were unfounded. Windgassen is the most sensitive Tristan on record, both strong and frail when needed. This is a dream cast for this opera. I don't normally think of Bohm as a Wagnerian, but his conducting on this recording rivals von Karajan. Nilsson has always been the ideal Isolde and Windgassen is in surprising good voice as Tristan. I prefer this recording over the von Karajan version because Ludwig & Tavela are superior to Rosl-Majdan & Hotter. It all depends on your preference.

This is an audio and video discography of Tristan und Isolde, an opera by Richard Wagner which was first performed on 10 June 1865 in Munich. Tristan und Isolde has a long recorded history. In the years before World War II, Kirsten Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior were considered to be the prime interpreters of the lead roles, and mono recordings exist of this pair in a number of live performances led by conductors such as Thomas Beecham, Fritz Reiner, Artur Bodanzky and Erich Leinsdorf.

Said about Tristan und Isolde. I fear the opera will be banned – unless the whole thing is parodied in a bad performance – only mediocre performances can save me! Perfectly good ones will be bound to drive people mad, – I cannot imagine it otherwise. Richard Wagner to Mathilde Wesendonck. My great love is Tristan und Isolde, and for that Wagner will have his place in the history of European culture because there he drops all his ideological bullshit, and all his dangerous sides.

Götterdämmerung is itself a translation of ragnarökkr, "Twilight of the Gods", as it is sometimes written in the Prose Edda. In the older Poetic Edda only ragnarök, "Fate of the Gods", is mentioned. It has been proposed that ragnarökkr was either a misconception on Snorri Sturluson's part or, more likely, poetic license as a play between the words rök, "fate, doom", and rökkr, "darkness, twilight.
