Life never stops for Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the French pianist who seems to have three hands and possibly three brains as well. Last year this master interpreter of Messiaen, Ligeti and company, plus an expanding mainstream classical repertoire, celebrated turning 50 by signing for the Big Yellow Label, Deutsche Grammophon. A chance to record something festive, maybe, some birthday bon-bons? No. Aimard turned for the first time to the music of Bach and his Everest of counterpoint, The Art of Fugue. He also set himself a personal schedule that might tire Superman.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard's debut on Deutsche Grammophon is the first recording of the mystical The Art of Fugue by a world-renowned pianist in 25 years. As a pre-eminent performer of modern music, Aimard brings a unique and exciting approach to his first ever Bach recording also serving as his first recording of Baroque repertoire.

The Art of Fugue (or The Art of the Fugue; German: Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV 1080, is an incomplete musical work of unspecified instrumentation by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). Written in the last decade of his life, The Art of Fugue is the culmination of Bach's experimentation with monothematic instrumental works.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard begins his exploration of Bach at the end, devoting his first recording for Deutsche Grammophon to the work that the composer left unfinished at his death.
