Brain Capers is the fourth album by the band Mott the Hoople. It was originally released in November 1971 in the UK by Island Records (catalogue number ILPS 9178) and on Island Records in Canada (cat. no. SW-9178), and was reissued in 2003 (on CD) by Angel Air (cat. SJPCD160). It was released January 1972 in the US on Atlantic Records (cat. SD 8304). The album was not initially a commercial success, and was the only Mott the Hoople album that failed to chart in either the UK or US.

All these changes are evident from the moment Brain Capers kicks in with the monumental "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," a phenomenally pile-driving number that just seems inevitable. As it gives way to a cover of Dion's "Your Own Backyard," it becomes clear that Mott have pulled off the trick of being sensitive while still rocking. And that's not the end of it - they ride an epic wave on the nine-minute "The Journey," pull off a love song on "Sweet Angeline," and generally rock like hell throughout the record.

Album · 1970 · 8 Songs. The 1970-’71 recording sessions for Mott the Hoople’s fourth album (their last for Atlantic) were famously fraught with mad shenanigans spearheaded by producer Guy Stevens (Traffic, The Clash), and lots of booze was consumed. And it sounds like it too-in the best, most rock ’n’ roll way possible. That The New York Dolls later rewrote Death May Be Your Santa Clause for Personality Crisis says lots about the rumblings here, but, as singer and main songwriter Ian Hunter once said, this album’s as schizoid as ever: half fast and half slow.
