Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, catswort, catwort, and catmint, is a species of the genus Nepeta in the family Lamiaceae, native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and parts of China. It is widely naturalized in northern Europe, New Zealand, and North America. The common name catmint can also refer to the genus as a whole.
Catnip is indeed an unusual phenomenon among cats, it has the ability to alter your cat’s behavior like nothing else can. So what exactly is the reason for what scientists have coined as The Catnip Effect ? Unfortunately for such inquisitive minds the exact reason of why Catnip affects cats in such a manner remains mostly a mystery. There is however much that we do know about Catnip and cats even if we don’t have the ultimate answer of exactly why? yet answered.
All cats respond differently to catnip. Some of them walk away cuz they couldn't care less, but others go ape. The cats that do go crazy are responding to the active ingredient in catnip called Nepetalactone. The reaction to this chemical is caused by the organ that operates a cat's five senses (touch, smell, sight, sound and taste. Those cats that do react will eat it or lick it; some roll in it and others just sniff it. The catnip reaction is inherited so not all of them respond. Catnip is completely safe and isn't addictive to cats so give your feline friend a treat like Catnip Puffs every now and then. The most amusing thing about giving cats catnip is the behavior change. Although it's safe, keep in mind you can have too much of a good thing. If a cat eats lots of fresh catnip it could puke or have diarrhea but this is rare. If it does happen don't give your cat as much catnip or any at all. Related Stories

Why do some cats like catnip so much? What does catnip do to cats, and is it harmful? We take a look at this interesting herb and it's effect on our cats. Maybe that’s exactly how your pet does react. Or maybe on their first encounter they took one sniff and wandered off looking underwhelmed and unimpressed. In this article we’ll look at why cats like catnip. Why it doesn’t work on all of them. It’s the smell of nepetalactone coming off the catnip herb which triggers their reaction. Perfect for cats to scratch, bite, and bat around. Both of my cats loves this toy. I had to get a second one because one of them was hogging it all the time. I also purchased the fish version which I think is cuter, but it must not be as strong or maybe they just prefer the banana.
