The Jazz Composer's Orchestra is a 1968 album by the Jazz Composer's Orchestra recorded over a period of six months with Michael Mantler as composer, leader and producer. Many of the key figures in avant-garde jazz from the time contributed on the album including Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri, Larry Coryell, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley. The album's finale features a two-part concerto for Cecil Taylor and orchestra.

German-born composer/trumpeter Michael Mantler and his then-wife Carla Bley were instrumental in developing within jazz the idea of self-sufficiency and independence from established record companies. Their creation of the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, with recordings released on their own label, was the culmination of this endeavor, and the first recording was one of the masterpieces of creative music in the '60s. Mantler had come from the European avant-classical tradition and sought to provide an orchestral framework supporting some of the most advanced musicians in avant-garde jazz.

More than forty-five years later The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update brings together some of Mantler's more recent colleagues-as well as new faces-in a collection that rivals the original in terms of freshness and enthusiasm. Mantler has consistently worked with variations of his signature style, so not surprisingly there is an element of familiarity in The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Update. Personnel: Michael Mantler: composer/trumpet; Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band: Christoph Cech: conductor; Harry Sokal: tenor and soprano saxophones; Wolfgang Puschnig: alto saxophone, flute; Bjarne Roupé: guitar; David Helbock: piano; Radio String Quartet Vienna: Bernie Mallinger, Ingmar Jenner: violin; Cynthia Liao: viola; Asja Valcic: cello.
