Most of my career, says Emmylou Harris, I’ve been a finder of songs, a gatherer of songs, so this showcases, in part, that side of what I do. Her latest Nonesuch release, All I Intended to Be, its simple but evocative title borrowed from the lyric of a Billy Joe Shaver song, does far more than that. But The Ballad of Sally Rose, Emmylou Harris’ 1985 country concept album and her first major label release composed entirely of songs she’d written, was, as she'd later describe it, a commercial disaster.

Wrecking Ball is the eighteenth studio album by American country artist Emmylou Harris, released on September 26, 1995 through Elektra Records. Moving away from her traditional acoustic sound, Harris collaborated with producer Daniel Lanois (best known for his production work with U2) and engineer Mark Howard. The album has been noted for atmospheric feel, and featured guest performances by Steve Earle, Larry Mullen, J. Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Lucinda Williams and Neil Young, who wrote the title song.

After 1981's Cimarron, Harris and the Hot Band cut a live album, Last Date, named in honor of the album's chart-topping single "(Lost His Love) On Our Last Date," a vocal version of the Floyd Cramer instrumental. Quickly, they returned to the studio to record White Shoes, Harris' final LP with Ahern at the helm. Her most far-ranging affair yet, it included covers of Donna Summer's "On the Radio," Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love," and Sandy Denny's "Old-Fashioned Waltz. The retrospective The Very Best of Emmylou Harris: Heartaches & Highways was also released in 2005 on Rhino. All the Roadrunning, a collection of songs written with Mark Knopfler over the course of seven years, was released in 2006. In 2007 Harris sang a duet with Anne Murray, which appeared on Murray's 2008 album Duets: Friends and Legends. The Brian Ahern-produced All I Intended to Be arrived in 2008 as well.
