The Song of Roland (French: La Chanson de Roland) is an epic poem (chanson de geste) based on the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778, during the reign of Charlemagne. It is the oldest surviving major work of French literature and exists in various manuscript versions, which testify to its enormous and enduring popularity in the 12th to 14th centuries.

The song narrates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, detailing how he was nailed to the cross, "whooped up the hill", speared in the side, hung his head and died, all the while keeping a dignified silence. Like all traditional music, the lyrics vary from version to version, but maintain the same story. Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff.

Roland Hayes: Six Centuries of Song. By Jason Victor Serinus, February 8, 2011. Lyric tenor and composer Roland Hayes (1887-1977) may be the most important Aframerican (his term) classical singer of the 20th century that you don’t know about. Part of his obscurity is due to the curse of racism. Consisting of 57 selections, originally released in 1953 and 1954, the recordings range from Old English folk songs, Dowland, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, and Wolf to Hayes’ arrangements of Aframerican folk songs, Negro worksongs, and spirituals. Though some are unaccompanied, most feature the pianism of Reginald Boardman. Despite the beauty of the voice, there is no getting around the fact that, especially higher in the range, age has taken its toll on Hayes’ instrument.
