Characters is the twenty-first studio album by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder released in late 1987. The album features three singles including "Get It", the Grammy-nominated "Skeletons" and "You Will Know", which both reached number one on the Billboard R&B Singles chart (the latter being his final American top 40 hit of his career).

American musician Stevie Wonder has released 23 studio albums, three soundtrack albums, four live albums, 11 compilations, one box set, and 98 singles. His first album, The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie, was released in 1962 when he was 12 years old, and his most recent, A Time to Love, was released in 2005.

Stevie Wonder shocked fans by taking only two years to release his next new non-soundtrack studio album, Characters. Unfortunately, it had long since become clear that Wonder was willing to settle for good pop music without challenging himself to make great pop music. And by now, a big chunk of his formerly mass audience had gotten the message: this was Wonder's first new album to miss the pop Top Five in 15 years. The black music audience, however, responded far more favorably, as the album topped the R&B charts for seven weeks.

I cannot see how one can walk away from this album dissatisfied, especially if you enjoy Wonder's work. While this CD can sound quite "poppy" in spots, many songs have that distinct 80's sound, it clearly has Wonder's fingerprints (or tips), all over it, and lucky for us listeners, he is a musical genius.
